The TOA HX-7B is a variable directivity array speaker. The HX-7 is a two-way compact array built on TOA's wave front control technology: eight 5.5-inch cone woofers and four waveguide-loaded compression drivers in one cabinet, crossing over at 1.7 kHz. Vertical coverage is set on site in 15-degree steps from 0° to 45°, and out to 60° with an optional bracket, while horizontal coverage stays at 100°.
Controlling the vertical pattern is what makes it work in the rooms that defeat ordinary speakers: long reverberation times and high background noise. Narrow the pattern and the energy goes to the audience instead of the ceiling and the far wall, so speech stays intelligible in a sports hall, a station concourse or a place of worship. Rated 750 W continuous program and 250 W continuous pink noise (350 W to IEC 60268-5) at 8 Ω, with 100 dB sensitivity. At 30 kg it is a substantial cabinet — rigging is a two-person job and the structure needs checking before anything goes up.
One thing to plan for: the HX-7 is an 8-ohm speaker with no internal transformer. To run it on a 70 V or 100 V distributed line it needs the MT-200 matching transformer, and the HY-MT7 adapter to mount the MT-200 to the cabinet. Neither is included.
This is the standard indoor version, with two Speakon NL4MPXX sockets as well as screw terminals. For an outdoor or under-eave position order the WP version, which adds IPX4 protection at the cost of some bass extension and the Speakon connectors. The HX-7 mounting system works in two parts. The HY-VM7 rigging bracket is what attaches to the speaker; it then couples to a wall bracket (HY-WM7) or a ceiling mount (HY-C0801) depending on where the speaker goes. TOA also sells the pairs as kits, which is usually the simpler way to order. Supplied in black; the same speaker in white is stocked as HX-7W, and the weather-resistant version as HX-7B-WP.
