The THX-5002-S is a THX® Select certified loudspeaker. Certification is not a badge — it is a measured standard for output, distortion and frequency response at reference level in a room of a defined size, which is why THX-certified speakers are specified for rooms where the cinema reproduction has to be accurate rather than merely loud.
It uses two 5.25" Cerametallic woofers with two 1" Titanium tweeters in vertically stacked tractrix horns. The horn is symmetrical, which gives flat in-room response with high efficiency and low distortion — the combination that lets a speaker hit reference level without strain.
As a surround speaker it is designed for the diffuse, enveloping presentation the surround channels call for, rather than the tight imaging the front three need.
Every THX speaker in the range is timbre-matched to the others, so an LCR front stage, surrounds and in-wall fills can be mixed across models without a tonal seam between channels. An edge-to-edge grille covers the whole speaker — simpler to paint, held by neodymium magnets with no moving parts, and flat enough to disappear into a modern interior.
