The ME-650-C is a fire-rated metal back-box for 6.5" in-ceiling speakers. It does two jobs at once: it lets an installer meet building code where a speaker cut-out would otherwise breach a fire-rated ceiling, and it stops sound passing from one room into the next.
Construction is high-grade cold-rolled steel with a layer of insulation. It exceeds one-hour fire-rating requirements and is designed to meet UL2043 for installation in plenum spaces, and has been tested to UL 263, ASTM E119-98, NFPA 251, UBC 7-1 and ULC CAN/ULC-S101-M89.
The insulation does more than satisfy the fire requirement — it cuts sound transmission into the adjacent space by at least 10dB, which is the difference between a bedroom ceiling speaker being a feature and being a nuisance. The fixed enclosure volume also means the speaker behaves consistently regardless of what the joist bay looks like.
It fits 16" or 24" stud spans, ships with the hardware for any of those applications, and has provisions for standard conduit connections. Pre-drilled holes speed up the install and keep the safety requirements met. The inside edge of the mounting ring is color-coded to match the corresponding Klipsch install-kit size code.
