The DS-180CDT sits in the Klipsch Designer series — architectural speakers that carry the same Tractrix® horn technology as the premium Klipsch lines into a price bracket that suits a whole-house distributed system rather than one showpiece room.
Acoustically it pairs an 8" (203.2mm) polypropylene woofer with a 1" (25.4mm) silk dome tweeter mated to a round Tractrix® horn. The horn is what separates these from a generic architectural speaker: it controls dispersion, so the sound arrives at ear level rather than spraying across the ceiling.
The headline feature is the patented Sky Hook® Cinch installation system. The dog legs engage automatically when the speaker is pushed into the cut-out, at a preset clamping force — so there is no way to over-torque and crack the baffle. If the opening is uneven, a quarter turn on each dog leg screw pulls it flush. Klipsch put install time reduction at up to 75%, which on a job with twenty ceiling speakers is most of a day.
The CDT designation means a directional tweeter: the horn assembly aims, so a speaker in a high or off-center ceiling position can still be pointed at the listening area.
A redesigned powder-coated magnetic steel grille removes the bezel entirely, so the speaker sits flush and reads as part of the ceiling rather than a fitting attached to it.
